DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PRESSURE AND STRESS
PRESSURE
*Pressure is defined as the normal force per unit area.
*Pressure is applicable in case of liquid and gas.
*The nature of pressure is always compressive.
*Magnitude of pressure at a point in a static fluid is equal in all direction as per PASCAL'law.
*Pressure=force/area
pressure=density*acceleration due to gravity *height (height is taken as the vertical distance from free surface)
*Pressure can be measured by using various devices such as pressure gauge and manometer etc
STRESS
*stress is defined as resisting force per cross-section area
Resisting force- When (tensile, compressive ,shear) force is applied on a deform able body ,the body
exert resisting force against the applied force which resist the body to get deform.
*Stress is applicable in case of solid only
*Nature of stress can be tensile ,compressive and shear type.
Tensile stress- stress which leads to elongation in a body.
compressive stress- stress which leads to compression in a body.
Shear stress- stress which leads to angular deformation in a body.
*Magnitude of stress at a point is different in different direction.
*stress=Resisting force/cross-section area
stress=strain*Young's modulus of elasticity
*There is no device to measure stress , it is measured by calculating elongation.
